Introducing the Deep Reads Book Club
Exploring the world's great literature together
Exploring Life and Literature
Last month, in my anniversary article, I announced the Deep Reads Book Club! For those of you who visit the physical website of this publication you may have noticed a new header along the top of the page.
That is the home for all things book club related. During 2024 I read the complete works of John Steinbeck and shared monthly updates. Those articles have now been linked to the book club page. In 2025, we will read the classic works of Homer—The Iliad and The Odyssey. I will publish our discussion each week as a separate essay that will come out on Fridays. This is a space for all of us to come together, share our thoughts, and learn from each other. In the next few weeks, I will send out an overview of the major translations and a detailed reading schedule so that you can read along with me if you wish.
It is important that I explain to you that I am not a scholar trained in the classics. I don’t speak or read ancient Greek. Quite simply, I am a man who believes in continuous learning throughout my life. I believe that great literature is the foundation of all education. My life’s passion is reading these great books, learning from them, discussing them with others, and applying them to our lives. So I will be reading these texts alongside you while exploring interesting connections between these works and other areas of art and literature. Together we will explore beyond the bookshelf to understand how these ancient poems have had such a lasting impact on culture and civilization.
Beyond the Bookshelf is a reader-supported publication. If you have the means and desire, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription.
Until next time,
This is a great idea! I have read parts of these two works but never in their entirety as it was too intimidating but doing it slow and steady and with a group led by you is perfect. It will keep me motivated and learn much more from the group than I would on my own. Thank you for creating this opportunity. I'm really looking forward to it.
Congratulations on your new Deep Reads Book Club Matthew!
